When I was 8 years old I was pretty androgynous looking. It didn’t help that I have a unisex name (Pat). People were always confusing me for a boy thanks to that and my bowl haircut. On the first day of summer camp I saw this group of 3 or 4 girls giggling and pointing at me. One of them came over and said “Sarah has a crush on you!”. I was shocked and said, “What? But I’m a girl…” She gasped and ran back to the group and loudly proclaimed “Ew you LEZZIE! That’s a girl!” The Sarah girl who had a “crush” on me started crying and ran to the bathrooms and didn’t come out until her parents came to pick her up.
